The VASA Story:
Building the Best Cat Drinking Fountain We Could

My name is Darren Scott and I created the VASA Waterwheel Pet Fountain.

I spent years as a biomedical process engineer in pharmaceutical manufacturing ...

where sterility and cleanliness were the essential foundation for life-saving medicines.

This standard of uncompromising cleanliness came to hit home in an unexpected way ...

you see ... I was visiting my cousin’s house and saw a slime-covered pet fountain pump sitting in his sink.

My stomach turned. “If this were in our factory, we would be shut down instantly!

Then came the gut punch:

My cousin’s cat had CKD — Chronic Kidney Disease.

I knew from my training that bacteria-laced water could invite infection and place extra strain on already failing kidneys ...

a hidden danger that could quietly shorten my cousin’s cat’s life.

Something had to be done!

I could not unsee that slimy pump.

I became obsessed.

Nights, weekends, even vacations turned into design sessions.

I filled my shop with sketches,
... 3D printers,
... electronic parts,
... and half-finished prototypes.

One design had an annoying dripping noise ...

the next a squeaking wheel ...

another a piercing vibrating hum from the motor ...

and the next would melt when sanitized in a dishwasher.

Each failure only fueled the next attempt.

7,468 attempts — until after 7 years of effort — VASA emerged!

Finally, a waterwheel pet fountain that can be easily sanitized to 99.999% germ-free.

The fountain that could have prolonged the life of my cousin's cat.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is the VASA pet fountain quiet?

Yes. The VASA is designed to be extremely quiet. Technically speaking it is < 48 dB which makes it quieter than a running refrigerator.

Is it easy for a cat to tip over the VASA?

No. At VASA we understand how rambunctious our cats can be. The super light pet fountain which you typically find on Amazon can be very easy for cats to tip over.

The VASA is designed with 5 separate feet which are wide apart to make it difficult to tip over.

Can the VASA easily slide or be pushed by a cat on a tile or wood floor?

No. VASA has 5 separate rubber feet which make it more difficult for a cat to slide and tip over the VASA.

Is the surface roughness of the VASA similar to ceramic and stainless steel fountains?

Yes. Surface roughness is measured by a profilometer, and lower surface roughness values are better for preventing microbe growth. The surface roughness of the VASA is 0.1 µm, which is comparable to stainless steel bowls (0.05 µm to 0.2 µm) and ceramic bowls (0.01 µm to 0.1 µm).

Will VASA be damaged if I run it without water?

No. Unlike Pet Fountains with pumps, VASA will not be damaged.

Does VASA have any blue or red lights you see at night?

No. We find that those lights attract bugs, so there are no lights.

Is VASA good for households with dogs and cats?

Yes. Dogs and cats both enjoy and drink from VASA.

Are special brushes required to clean VASA?

No. Unlike pumps, no brushes are required to reach small, tight crevices in the typically pet fountain pump.

THE PROBLEM WITH PET FOUNTAIN PUMPS

Because pet fountain pumps are not properly sanitized, they continue to "re-infect" the water.
